Obama Washi Paper
Obama Wakasa Washi
Hand-made paper produced in the Obama Wakasa region of Japan

The oldest recorded reference to Obama Wakasa Washii dates back to the 10th century.
Production flourished in the beginning of the Edo Period (17th century). Lord Tadakatsu Sakai of Obama, encouraged the cultivation of both "kouzo" (mulberry plants), and mitsumata (a bush used in paper production) which were essential raw material used for making wahsi. The increased volume of kouzo and mitsumata lead to a rise in washi production and consequently the paper industry thrived.

Historically, Obama Wakasa washi was used as a protective wrapping for kimono and other silk goods. It was also widely used to make amagasa (Japanese paper umbrellas) and shoji screens. We continue the traditional techniques incorporated in making washi in the Obama Watada region of Fukui Prefecture. Currently, the most common type of washi we make is used for craft goods such as dolls, boxes, coasters and other hand-made craft items.

Obama Wakasa washi is known for its strength, beautiful colors and high grade of quality. We use only the finest mulberry plants and water, which comes from the pristine Tamura River. We hope that you will appreciate not only its strength but also its beauty and elegance. Please enjoy the paper!
