Japanese Lacquerware
Edo Japanese lacquerware originate from Shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa inviting lacquer-artisan from Kyoto when he entered Edo Castle triumphantly. Since then Edo lacquerware was spread with the culture of Edo in various fine things for furniture, tea ceremony and table wares.
The real fine selection of the Japanese lacquer items are crafted by the artisans with the special lacquer technique in the following process.
The fine selection lacquerware needs to be placed in the dry and cool storage and they are not dishwasher safe. Please handle them with care.

Adjustment of wooden base |
Smoothen the wooden surface by spruce grass |

Adjustment by glue |
Apply special glue to the trace of wooden crack and finish evenly |

Wooden surface compaction |
Strengthen the wooden surface by applying the sedome lacquer |

4 |
Grinding work |
Grind the wooden surface with the grind stone |

5 |
Clothing |
Apply linen, silk gauze or washi paper mixed with glue around the wooden base and even out the surface when dried |

Applying polish |
Apply the polishing lacquer (mixture of sedome lacquer and polishing powder) to the clothed wooden base |

7 |
Water grinding |
Grind the wooden base with the grind stone and water |

8 |
Groundwork compaction |
Strengthen the wooden base by applying sedome lacquer |

9 |
First coat of lacquer |
Apply the base coat lacquer with the lacquer brush |

10 |
First charcoal grinding |
Grind with boku charcoal and water |
|
11 |
Second coat of lacquer |
Apply the high-quality mid-coat lacquer with the lacquer brush |

Second charcoal grinding |
Grind with Suruga charcoal and water |

Finishing coat of lacquer |
Apply the black or colored top coat lacquer smoothly |
Ro-iro Finish
Same process until the process 12

Top coat of lacquer |
Apply the top coat lacquer with ro-iro lacquer |

Top coat grinding |
Grind with ro-iro charcoal and water |

15 |
Polishing of uneven surface |
Polish the uneven lacquer density with watered polishing power |

Wiping the lacquered coat |
Apply the raw lacquer over the surface and rub with cloth then wipe out with washi paper |

17 |
Polishing work with oil |
Polish the lacquered surface with oil and polishing powder by hand |
|
18 |
Wiping the lacquered coat |
Apply the raw lacquer over the surface and rub with the cotton cloth |
|
19 |
Gloss polishing |
Polish the surface by palm with the powder of deer horn |

20 |
Finishing gloss |
Final glossing work on the polishing lacquer | |
