Message from Shigehito Matsuda
Since when I first started to work on sculptures, I was dreaming to create a figurative art which airily exists in space, free from the gravity, the fate of sculpture.
I learned the importance of life from late Soichi Hakozaki. Since then, I am continued to produce my works stating a theme of "Wandering Mist".
Airborne float expresses the freedom from the gravity and things keep changing and moving along without stops.
Take a spring of water in the mountain, for example. It runs through the valley and takes into the river. This river leads into the ocean. The water in the ocean evaporates and forms a cloud. This cloud brings rain. Rained water is absorbed into the ground and returns to Mother Earth. This cycle of rebirth means the reincarnation (the wheel of life) taught in the Buddhist view of life. Water also is the rise of life. The ancient philosopher, Tarres, said "All creation is born from the water and returns to the water".
Now, I am seeking for the modern space arts based on the Japanese aesthetic feeling born during the Muromachi and Momoyama Periods (16-17 centuries). I wish for the creation of new field of figurative art by pursuing the world of the traditional Japanese beauty sense.
